September Recap
This month we had around 6 events, including the PEAR dinners, Discussions about the “Most Important Century”, the ACX Meet-up, and Petrov Day. The ACX meet-up had around 20 people, the presentation from Dr Sebesta, and then we talked about metacognition in various respects. The conversations were great, and we plan to use the feedback we got to make some improvements to the AV equipment that will make future presentations even better. Oh, and Yuda Pear made her debut (picture below)!
Thanks to everyone who came to Petrov day, and to everyone who helped with the art and the ceremony itself. If anyone missed the ceremony and would like to attend a make-up show, let us know! It always strikes me how precarious of a situation the cold war environment was for nuclear annihilation, and in a lot of ways Petrov day calls us to continue to reduce the probability of today’s current and future existential risks. Petrov’s story itself is very touching and is a great example of the courage it takes to prioritize humanity as a whole as opposed to our other interests if we are ever in that situation.
Updates for October
1. Budget Allocation on Discord – 10/07
We got a grant from EAIF! We hope to use it to increase the visibility and quality of PEAR Events, especially going into the winter with COVID. Feel Free to join us this Thursday on the PEAR Discord at 7pm to help us allocate the funds to make the greatest improvements possible.
2. Book discussion of the Precipice – 10/10
We have some exciting upcoming events such as an EA discussion about the book Precipice on 10/10 at the Barley Pod. If you don’t have the time to read it or if you are already familiar with the concepts, feel free to read a book review (or a podcast) or just come chat.
3. PEAR Dinners Update – 10/12
We will be having our PEAR social dinners every other week instead of weekly as Rachel is going to be traveling for a while making her documentary!! This is awesome, keep it up Rachel!
